One of the many joys of living in New England is experiencing the change of seasons. As a designer, feeling the shift in weather is so important to me. It helps me to design for the many regions and climates across the country and incorporate the cozy fabrics and rich color palettes that come with fall (which I LOVE!). Inspiration comes organically for me. The ground firms up just a bit, the mornings are crisp and the scent in the air brings me right back to my childhood when I wore a wine colored corduroy jumpsuit with deep navy suede clogs back to school in 90 degree heat. Clothing excited me more than classes! And having a September birthday meant even more clothes! Whatever was IN, I wore, regardless of the temperature.
Fast forward several decades and thankfully all those fashion rules and sweating through September are out the window. I can get my Fall Fashion Fix with lightweight fabrics in beautiful warm transitional colors rather than piling on sweaters at the first hint of fall. I change over my closet gradually now rather than panicking September 1st. My flip flops and boots share mudroom space well into October.
Transitioning from one season to another is exciting – new textures and tones, inspiring layers, and an opportunity to change out your wardrobe can make you feel energized and excited for
the shifts in nature.
During this time of year, I receive a lot of questions from Habitat customers about making the transition easy… so I thought I’d share some tips on transitioning from summer cookouts to fall
hayrides without missing a beat:
Take your time
Transition right along with the weather. Pack away a little summer at a time as the temps change. Add in lightweight fall pieces first and gradually work your way to sweaters.
Add Deeper Colors
Grab lightweight, buy now, wear now fabrics in rich fall colors for an easy fall refresh. No sweating necessary!
Add Layering Pieces
Make sure to have a neutral “goes with everything” jacket on standby for cool mornings and chilly nights. I love sweater vests for early fall layering.
Black and white is always in season.
Switch out your Accessories
Retire the sandals and pair boots or shoes with dresses instead.
Of course, I’ve already started grabbing my favorite Habitat pieces before the sell out! Have a wonderful fall.

I design my collection for real women leading real lives. We all want to look relevant and current, but in our own way, reflecting our own sense of self and style. While I’m guilty of pouring over the latest fashion magazines, I’m often thinking, “Who wears that?”. I aim to enhance your style, not dictate it.
